Our Services Services We Provide Improving the quality of life, promoting dignity, empowerment and independence of people with disabilities FURTHER EDUCATION People with disabilities who leave a school for special needs after attaining the age of 18 years have no further education or training programme. Continuing education is pivotal to the development and empowerment of people with disabilities. The aim of JOCOD’s further education and development programme is to bridge the gap in the country’s education system. Our school provides 386 beneficiaries with the following learning modules: Stimulation and Leisure library classes for very low cognitive functioning beneficiaries Numeracy and Literacy (PRE – AET, Class1,2 & 3) Adult Education Training (AET) Life Skills Training WELFARE and RELATED SERVICES This programme through many different interventions aims to improve the quality of life of our beneficiaries. Our social workers with the assistances of specialized service providers in the community provide the following services: Casework/Psychosocial services – therapeutic counselling one on one counselling, crisis intervention, home visits, referrals to clinics etc. Group work – relevant common issues discussed in group sessions. Development Work – Awareness and Prevention programmes relating to relevant day to day topics e.g. substance abuse, gender violence, etc. LEARNERSHIPS The aim of this programme is twofold: To use skills training and learnerships as a vehicle to empower, develop, increase employability, and to integrate the higher functioning beneficiaries into: The mainstream and to make them employable in the open labour market Retain the lower functioning beneficiaries at JOCOD so that they could use the skills they acquire in our contract workshops and other projects. All learnerships are accredited courses. SKILLS TRAINING Skill training is on –going (accredited and non-accredited) SPORTS and RECREATION The physical and mental wellbeing of our beneficiaries is the reason for this programme. JOCOD’s beneficiaries participate in the different codes of sports: Athletics Netball Floor Hockey Male and Female Soccer Our teams participate in local and provincial tournaments.
